Portrait of a Czech painter. He became famous almost overnight thanks to a theatrical poster by Gismond (1894–1895), which was ordered from him by the Parisian actress Sarah Bernhardt. The actress later signed a contract with Mucha, and he created several more posters for her and the Renaissance Theater in Paris. His life's work is the cycle of large-format canvases Slavonic Epic, on which he worked for eighteen years. In addition, together with Jaroslav Kvapil and Ladislav Syllab, he also contributed to the restoration of Freemasonry in Czechoslovakia.
